For 30 years John Burch was involved in all aspects of Equity Capital Markets including: institutional sales, investment research, investment banking and for 16 years he headed the Equity Syndicate Department at Sun Trust Equitable Securities. He is co-author/editor of Capital Markets Handbook, an authoritative desk reference for capital markets professionals, first published in 1999 and revised annually for the past 17 years.
He was active in industry affairs in a leadership role, serving as Chairman of the Securities Industry Association’s (SIA) Syndicate Committee, a standing committee, which represented members’ interests in responding to regulatory proposals affecting capital markets practices and procedures and which initiated educational programs concerning capital markets developments. He also served as Chairman of the Southern/South Central District of the SIA which carried out the work at the local level for 108 member firms in the 15 state district.
After retiring, he established a consulting firm Capital Markets Advisors, LLC. He is also a certified FINRA arbitrator and has been a guest speaker at the Booth School of Business, Indiana University; Owen School of Management, Vanderbilt University; Massey School of Business, Belmont University; Vanderbilt Law School and Tennessee State University.
