Unexpected acceleration prompts recall of over 11,000 electric bicycles

By Susan Lasser, J.D.

The company has received reports of the bicycle’s electrical cable malfunctioning.

Pedego Inc., of Fountain Valley, California, has recalled approximately 11,600 electric bicycles because an improperly manufactured electrical cable can cause the bicycle to accelerate unexpectedly, posing a fall hazard to the user. Pedego dealers will repair affected bicycles (CPSC Recall Notice, No. 20-188, September 23, 2020).

Incidents and injuries. Pedego has received five reports of the bike’s electrical cable malfunctioning, causing the bike to accelerate unexpectedly. No injuries have been reported, however.

Product description. This recall involves six models of Pedego electric bicycles. Models include the Interceptor (Including Platinum Edition), City Commuter (Including Mid Drive Edition and Black Edition), Boomerang Plus, Ridge Rider, Trail Tracker (Including Gorilla Edition), and Stretch (Including Dual Drive Edition). The model name is printed on the chain guard or chain stay of the bicycle; and "Pedego" is printed on the bicycle’s frame. These bicycles were sold in various colors.

The bicycles were manufactured in China and Vietnam; and they were sold at bicycle stores nationwide and online at www.pedego.com, from January 2018 through August 2020 for between $3,000 and $4,700.

Remedy. Consumers should stop using the recalled bicycles immediately and contact a local Pedego dealer to arrange for a free repair.

Important CPSC Recall Remedy Notice Due to COVID-19. CPSC is advising consumers that because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding COVID-19, some of the remedies identified in recall notices may not be currently available. Consumers should check with the recalling companies for further details. Moreover, the agency notice reminds consumers that CPSC and the recalling firms urge consumers not to use recalled products.
