Takata Corporation has issued three more recalls affecting approximately 5,700,000 PSPI, PSPI-1.1, PSPI-2, PSPI-6, PSPI-L, and SPI air bag inflators assembled as part of the frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment, such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bags, after determining that these inflators also could rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high, moderate, and lower absolute humidity, temperatures, and temperature cycling. The company again warned that an inflator rupture could result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death. These recalls were issued in compliance with the terms specified in the May 2016 Amendment to the November 2015 Coordinated Remedy Program in EA15-001 and affect vehicles that were not included in prior national recalls (NHTSA Recall Notices, Nos. 17E001, 17E002, and 17E003, Report receipt date: January 5, 2017).
The recalls include around 3,100,000 2005-2008 vehicles ever registered in Zone C (Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming); 1,300,000 2012 vehicles ever registered in Zone A (Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands); and 1,300,000 model year 2009 vehicles ever registered in Zone B (Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia).
In its safety recall notice, Takata stated that it was not aware of any test ruptures in ballistic testing of returned inflators in the designated categories and model years or confirmed field incidents of the subject non-desiccated ammonium nitrate inflators other than those already under recall as detailed in prior defect information reports. However, out of an abundance of caution, Takata has filed these three defect reports in cooperation with NHTSA in order to promote public safety.
Remedy. Takata will be working with vehicle manufacturers to determine into which vehicles the affected inflators were installed either as original or replacement equipment during service. As this work progresses, numerous vehicle recalls will likely be announced by the impacted vehicle manufacturers. NHTSA will supply this information as soon as possible. Takata and NHTSA are aware that remedy parts are not currently available for many of the vehicles containing inflators covered by this defect information report. Takata will work closely with each vehicle manufacturer to develop an appropriate remedy for each vehicle and urges consumers to get the affected inflators replaced promptly after they are notified that a replacement is available. The Coordinated Remedy Program, being administered by the Independent Monitor, will prioritize the supply of remedy parts to the vehicles and zones that present the highest risk.
