South Shore Industries recalls 310K chests of drawers for tip-over and entrapment hazards

By Colleen Kave, J.D.

One reported tip-over incident resulted in the death of a toddler.

South Shore Industries Ltd., of Canada, has recalled around 310,000 Libra style 3-drawer chests because the chests are unstable if they are not anchored to the wall, posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children. An additional 6,900 chests were sold in Canada (CPSC Recall Notice, No. 19-116, May 9, 2019).

Incidents and injuries. South Shore has received two reports of tip-over incidents involving the recalled chests of drawers. One report stated that a child received bruises on his leg and scratches. Another incident reported a fatality involving a two-year-old and an unanchored, empty 3-drawer chest.

Product description. This recall involves Libra style 3-drawer chests of drawers sold in nine colors. Each drawer has one metal handle. The model number is printed on a label on the back of the chest. The chests measure 27 1/2 inches high by 31 1/4 inches wide and 15 1/2 inches deep, and each weighs about 56 pounds. A complete list of affected model numbers and colors is available at www.cpsc.gov. Chests with the affected model numbers that end in the letter A, B, C, D, or E are also included in this recall. Some models of the 3-drawer chests were sold as part of a three-piece bedroom set that also included a bed and nightstand. Only the 3-drawer chests in the bedroom sets are included in this recall.

These 3-drawer chests, which were manufactured in Canada and Mexico, were sold online at Walmart.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, and other online retailers from October 2009 through July 2018 for about $60.

Remedy. Consumers should stop using any recalled chest that is not properly anchored to the wall immediately, and place it in an area that children cannot access. Consumers should contact South Shore to select one of the following recall options:

  • a full refund with free pick-up of the chest;
  • packaging and a prepaid shipping label from the company to mail in the drawer slides for a full refund; or
  • a free tip-over restraint kit and a one-time free in-home installation of the kit.
