After months of investigation, Samsung Electronics has linked the causes of the battery fires that have plagued the company’s Galaxy Note7 mobile devices to two separate factors impacting two different batteries—both of which have been involved in safety recalls, the company announced on January 23, 2017. Both issues involved the improper positioning of electrodes within the lithium-ion batteries, which caused short-circuiting. Samsung also announced on January 22, 2017, that it was expanding its current recalls (CPSC Recall Notice #16-266) to include all original and replacement Galaxy Note7 devices sold or exchanged in the United States.
DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business for Samsung, and executives from independent industry groups including UL, Exponent, and TUV Rheinland, presented detailed results of their investigations at a press conference in Seoul, Korea. Koh apologized for the incidents and expressed gratitude to Galaxy Note7 customers, mobile operators, retail and distribution partners, and business associates for their patience and continued support.
The speakers also unveiled Samsung’s planned response to the incidents. The company has implemented a broad range of internal quality and safety processes to further enhance product safety, including procedures called the Multi-Layer Safety Measures and the 8-Point Battery Safety Check. The Multi-Layer Safety Measures impact the product planning stage and encompass improved safety standards for the materials in the design of the battery, a new hardware design that adds brackets around the battery for protection, and improved software algorithms for governing battery charging temperature, charging current, and charging duration. The 8-Point Battery Safety Check involves putting the batteries through extreme testing, inside and out, followed by careful inspection by X-ray and the human eye to ensure highest quality.
