At the request of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford Motor Company has expanded a previously-announced safety recall of model year 2013-15 Ford C-MAX and Ford Escape, 2012-15 Ford Focus, 2015 Ford Mustang, 2014-16 Ford Transit Connect, and Lincoln MKC vehicles to include an estimated 1,500,000 additional vehicles. Of approximately 2,383,292 vehicles affected by this recall, 2,046,297 were sold in the United States and federalized territories, 233,034 were sold in Canada, and 61,363 were sold in Mexico (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 16V643, Report receipt date: September 6, 2016).
The recalled vehicles have a pawl spring tab in the side door latch that could break, preventing the door from latching. According to the company, if the door is unable to close, the door may unlatch while driving, increasing the risk of injury. Ford has identified one reported accident and three reported injuries that may be related to this issue.
Remedy. Ford dealers will replace the side door latches at no cost to the customer.
Contact information. Owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
