Burn hazard prompts Willis Electric to recall over 99K artificial Christmas trees

Consumers are advised to stop using the tree’s foot-pedal controller and to contact the company for a replacement, free of charge.

Willis Electric Co. Ltd., of Taiwan, is recalling about 99,000 Home Accents Holiday artificial Christmas trees because the tree’s foot-pedal controller can overheat, posing a burn hazard. The recall includes an additional 5,100 trees that were sold in Canada (CPSC Recall Notice, No. 20-153, July 23, 2020).

Incidents and injuries. The firm has received 509 reports of incidents of overheating involving the foot-pedal controller, including one report of a burn.

Product description. This recall involves mode-switching foot-pedal controllers included with 2019 Home Accent Holiday 7.5 ft. and 9 ft. artificial pine Christmas trees. Model numbers W14N0126, W14N0127, W14N0148, W14N0149, and W14N0157, as well as the SKU numbers, can be found on the product label on the Christmas tree’s cord. These numbers are listed below:

  • Model no. W14N0126: SKU nos. 1004363929 and 1004213737
  • Model no. W14N0127: SKU nos. 1004391988 and 1004147107
  • Model no. W14N0148: SKU no. 1004213742
  • Model no. W14N0149: SKU no. 1004213744
  • Model no. W14N0157: SKU nos. 1004363928 and 1004213736

These trees were manufactured in China and were imported by Home Depot Product Authority LLC, of Atlanta, Georgia. They were sold exclusively at Home Depot from June 2019 through December 2019 for between $80 and $360.

Remedy. Consumers should immediately stop using the foot-pedal controller, dispose of it, and contact Willis Electric for a free replacement foot-pedal controller.

CPSC is advising consumers that because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding COVID-19, some of the remedies identified in recall notices may not be currently available. Consumers should check with the recalling companies for further details. Moreover, the agency notice reminds consumers that CPSC and the recalling firms urge consumers not to use recalled products.
