The first U.S. commercial deployments of 5G have started to roll out. But 5G deployment will be limited to a few select markets unless significant hurdles can be overcome. To build the networks, wireless operators will need spectrum and cooperative city governments. To use and expand the networks, they will need patient investors and an operating environment with global standards for technology and spectrum.
