John T. Adney is nationally recognized as an authority on life insurance taxation. A partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Davis & Harman LLP, Mr. Adney’s practice focuses on the federal income taxation of life insurance, annuities, long-term care insurance, the business uses of insurance products, and life insurance company taxation. He represents clients, including coalitions of life insurers, before Congress, the Treasury Department, and the Internal Revenue Service.
Mr. Adney is co-editor and a contributing author of the Annuities Answer Book (Wolters Kluwer 2017), co-author of Life Insurance & Modified Endowments (Society of Actuaries 2015), and co-author of the taxation chapter in Variable Annuities and Variable Life Insurance Regulation (Practicing Law Institute 2017). He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Financial Service Professionals and serves on of the Editorial Board of Taxing Times, the newsletter of the Society of Actuaries’ Taxation Section.
Mr. Adney is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia and the U.S. Supreme Court, a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of Life Insurance Counsel, and past chair of the Committee on Insurance Companies of the ABA’s Section of Taxation. He received his B.A. summa cum laude from Millikin University in 1972 and his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1975.
