Alan Meisel is Professor of Law and Bioethics at the University of Pittsburgh. He directs Pitt Law’s Health Law Certificate Program and the Master of Studies in Law Program, both of which he founded. He also is the co-founder and former director of the University’s Center for Bioethics and Health Law.
Professor Meisel served as Assistant Director for Legal Studies at the President's Commission for the Study of Ethical Issues in Medicine in 1982, and served on the Ethics Working Group of the White House Task Force on Health Care Reform in 1993. He was also a member of the Advisory Council of the National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute from 1998-2003. Professor Meisel was the first chair of the Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee at the University of Pittsburgh and one of the principal co-draftsmen of that committee’s operating procedures and standards. He has been a member of the IRB at the University of Pittsburgh and at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Professor Meisel is the author of numerous articles in law reviews, medical journals, and anthologies on end-of-life decisionmaking and other issues in bioethics and law.
